"Let your mind start a journey thru a strange new world. Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before. Let your soul take you where you long to be...Close your eyes let your spirit start to soar, and you'll live as you've never lived before."

- Erich Fromm

Cooked Vegan------------>R.A.W.

In the beginning, switching to a plant-based diet was a very natural occurrence for me. I did not have some in-depth, philosophical argument about it. I just didn't want to be told what to eat anymore, and I especially did not want to eat animal flesh. I liked animals, and felt a special kinship with them. So at 19, I stopped eating meat and adopted my first cat.

However, after nearly 10 years, 7 as a lacto-ovo vegetarian, and just over 2 years as a cooked vegan, I still felt like I was missing something. I wanted to achieve true HEALTH, and a vegan diet just wasn't providing me with that anymore. I was started to feel fatigued again, and results in the gym did not come easily. I didn't get it. I was working out 6 days a week, sometimes twice a day.

When I was first getting into veganism, I had read about the raw foods diet, and it seemed really extreme to me at the time. But after being vegan, the idea didn't seem all that extreme anymore and was actually very appealing to me. And it also brought something to my attention that struck me as very strange when I gave it some thought.

I had never consistently eaten a lot of raw veggies before! Sometimes days
went by where I did not consume any raw vegetables or fruit. I liked veggies and I don't mind them raw, ESPECIALLY with a delicious dressing! I felt as if something very basic had been kept from me. I had to find out what I had been missing. I decided to try it for a weekend.

I shared with one of my best friends that I wanted to eat just raw foods for a weekend and she was totally for it. She was already quite a fan of my vegan cooking, so three days with my un-cooking seemed like a good way to try a raw diet. We drove up to my parents mountain house in North Carolina with 3 grocery bags full of produce, seaweeds, nuts, oils, seasonings and that's all—nothing processed, nothing to cook except 1 package of organic tempeh.

The first thing I noticed was that the food was great! I was getting to use everything I had ever learned about balancing flavors, creating texture and executing a colorful, beautiful dish from my mom, a wonderful chef, and working in the restaurant industry for so many years. We had salads with yummy dressings, smoothies, seaweed with everything!, soups and nut spreads. I was so satiated the entire time, and I felt happy and energized.

The most remarkable thing though was that each morning when I woke up and looked in the mirror, I could see a really big difference in my skin. By the 3rd morning when I looked in the mirror, my skin was remarkably clear and had this glow to it that I had never seen before. It was like I could see the life force energy emanating from face. I could see it in my friend's skin too. That was it. I knew that this diet was really something special!

Now I didn't transition to a 100% raw foods immediately after that. However, I was left with a real, tactile experience that the raw foods diet is a healing diet. It is a diet that gets you back to Health so that you can just BE who you were meant to be—naturally feeling good, energized and beautiful.

Discovering My Mission to Heal

After that weekend, in order to stay RAW, I had to keep recreating for myself that it was worth it because it's not always easy. To make RAW part of a balanced lifestyle, which is where the real benefits lie, you have to create a big WHY. There is much OPPOSITION out there—BUT THE GREATEST OPPOSITION IS IN YOUR OWN MIND. Keep expanding your limits by creating something HUGE that PULLS YOU FORWARD, that constantly RE-CHARGES YOU, that leaves you UNSTOPPABLE. When you use your mind as it was designed, you tap into a reservoir of conscious energy that will keep you on your path...just follow the opportunities. Otherwise, you won't stay RAW. Why would you? It's TOO hard!

I am in love with my diet because I am free to create whatever I want with my body and with my life. I have access to TRUE POWER. This is why I am not afraid to look at what is really going on in the world—the truth that lies behind the curtain, so to speak, because I have a very real experience of doing something about it at least 3 times a day.

"A healthy future is a matter of the healing choices we make today."

It takes something to stay RAW. This diet is not for the faint of heart. You have to be willing to grow and expand with the world around you. You have to be a warrior, empowered by your own discontent AND willing to take responsibility for what you don't like. For if you are responsible for it, you can shift it.

The transition in the 'before and after' pictures above did not occur over night. The one on the right is me a little over 2 years raw while the first one is me as a vegan in the end of 2006. I went raw in the summer of 2007.

Quote of the Month:

"Recognizing, accepting, and expressing our authentic interior reality lies at the heart of honesty; only when we are honest with ourselves can we speak or act honestly with anyone else. In the sense of integrity, honesty entails acting in line with higher laws despite negative impulses to the contrary.

Live according to your highest light and more light will be given."
