5 EASY Tips to Maintain Your Healing During the Holidays

The holidays are a time to celebrate.  It is a time to share in the abundance of life with friends and family.  And I say that the best way to do this is to stay true to the practices that serve you.  There is no sense in abandoning all reason when it comes to our food choices and there's no reason to completely deprive ourselves either!

Here are 5 EASY tips for maintaining your healing and enjoyment during the holidays!

1) Decorate your plate with COLOR!  If your plate is mostly brown and white, your meal is likely leaning towards highly processed carbohydrates and cooked proteins and not properly balanced.  Tonya Kay shared with us during our online interview, that one of the things that she does is simply get to the vegetables first—before they are sautéed in heavy cream and butter.
Choose veggies of varying color to be the main attraction on your plate... ESPECIALLY GREEN!  Lettuces, kale, collards and HERBS, all help to lower the glycemic response from the body.  They also work in synergy with one another as well as other veggies to provide you with more bioavailable nutrition while filling you up with beneficial fiber and essential amino acids.

2) Stay hydrated.  Be sure to be get your eight 8oz glasses of water everyday, and the more water you can attain from your food through raw fruits and vegetables, the better.  *Try this highly supportive digestive practice: If you anticipate a large meal (16oz. or more), consume an 8oz. glass of filtered water, and nothing else, 30 minutes to an hour before.  Then wait, then eat and then wait another 20-45 before consuming another 4-8oz glass of water (longer is better).  Do this and say goodbye to that uncomfortable bowling ball that sits in your stomach after a meal.

3) BYOF (Bring Your Own Food).  However, instead of bringing only enough for yourself, call the host and let them know you'll be bringing a potluck dish.  Make it RAW and SUPER DELICIOUS.  And if you're new to raw foods, that's fine.  Make something simple and easy, like nut pate, and share it with your loved ones.  It can act as your main dish, while it serves as an hor d'oeurve for them with cut veggies.  This way you won't have to feel like the black sheep.  You also get to participate in one of the important things that makes any celebration special: SHARING GOOD FOOD!

4) Don't wait; start your exercise program today!  Exercise is a crucial part of any health program.  Just focusing on diet is not enough.  This doesn't have to mean you get a personal trainer or join a gym, but start TODAY with wherever you are at and do what feels good.  Walk, run, bike, hike, climb a tree, DANCE, jump on the trampoline, take the stairs instead of the elevator, stretch, watch an exercise video, play with the dog, play with the kids, wash the car, pull the weeds...IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT YOU DO AS LONG AS YOU DO IT!  In addition to a strengthened physical body, heart and immune system, you will also get to experience yourself as disciplined, which leads to more empowered choices!

5) Share your healing goals with your family and friends.  Give yourself the permission to powerfully respond to questions or even criticism you might get.  You don't have to pursue your healing journey alone.  Share the benefits you've received and why it serves you to MAINTAIN your healing foods diet.  At the very least, those around you are given a chance to be in your world, rather than be separate from you at a time when we should be relishing the company of our loved ones.  Take on this practice and see what other miracles open up...

I hope these tips help you as much as they've helped me enjoy my diet during times of celebration. If you have any tips of your own, please post them below.  And remember the most important practice of all during the holidays: Giving Thanks!

Quote of the Month:

"Recognizing, accepting, and expressing our authentic interior reality lies at the heart of honesty; only when we are honest with ourselves can we speak or act honestly with anyone else. In the sense of integrity, honesty entails acting in line with higher laws despite negative impulses to the contrary.

Live according to your highest light and more light will be given."
